This course will provide students with the knowledge of political, institutional and economic aspects of monetary integration in the EU. The evolution of the European monetary integration will be placed in the into historical and political context. The course will start with start by looking at the history of monetary integration in the EC/EU. We will discuss not only the economic aspects of the monetary integration, but also specific international and political context of the introduction of euro. In the second part we will focus on formal aspects of monetary integration in contemporary European Union – institutions, goals and policies. We will also discuss the Eurozone crisis and the subsequent push towards the completion of the monetary union through further integration in banking union, capital union and fiscal union.
