The course will focus on the most recent development in the European Union, its member states but also on the EU’s relations with external actors. More specifically, we will discuss issues political, economic, institutional or legal issues which drew attention of decision-makers, media and wider European public and sparked controversy and debate.

The format of the course will allow us to revisit those controversies and debates. The students will be expected to formulate interesting and relevant questions for each topic and participate in the discussion. We will summarize broader context of the debate, what is at stake and what are the implication for the future of the European Union and its member states. We will rely on respected English-language media outlets when identifying and revisiting the debates and controversies in the EU, but we will also rely on student’s previous knowledge of EU institutions, policies as well as theories of the European integration. Therefore, students will learn how to use their existing empirical and theoretical knowledge for a better understanding of contemporary European integration.
