The aim of the course is to introduce qualitative research methods used in social sciences and particularly in the field of international relations. Starting from the essentials of the research process, the first part of the course will focus on the research design and general issues related to methodology. In the second part, students will be familiarized with the basic methods of analysis including single-/comparative case-study, discourse analysis, process tracing, ethnography and biography. Each lecture will cover the introduction of the specific method, assessment of its strengths and weaknesses and a final discussion of its practical use in empirical research. The final part of the course will give space to the students to present a research design with a special emphasis on the methodological aspects.
