This course aims to give students an introduction to some of the main themes and thinkers over the course of the history of British and American philosophy. We start with the advent of modern philosophy in England before the industrial revolution, and will trace ideas in epistemology (philosophical theories of knowledge and understanding), theories for and against political revolution, the beginnings of liberalism and theories of freedom, punishment and multiculturalism.
