The course aims to introduce research and the most essential principles that govern the process. We will start with some basic terminology (such as what counts as qualitative vs. quantitative research) and the key components of a research design. These elements will be translated into practical steps of conducting research, which might be useful for students of international relations, especially within writing essays and working on final BA theses. The course will be oriented practically, which means students will get an opportunity to gain skills in reviewing literature, formulating a problem/puzzle, constructing hypotheses or selecting case studies. Each session will start with an introductory lecture followed by assignments and practical tasks, which require active participation of students.
